Prince William County, VA – Deed Book Q, 1763-1768, pages 371-374.  This Indenture made 2 June 1766 between Richard Graham of Town of Dumfries in County of Prince William and Colony of Virginia, Merchant, of one part and Anthony Bacon of City of London Esquire and Company… (a long list of others) and Mr. Gawen Lawson, Factor for Messrs Bogle and Company Merchants of Glasgow of the other part… and to said Gawen Lawson, 25 pounds Virginia Currency for the better securing the payment of the said several and respective sums in the manner herein after mentioned.

December 4th, 1849 – I am this day 91 years old.  I was born in 1758 at my grandfather’s Major Philip Clayton’s who lived at Catalpa, where the Hon. J. S. Barbour now lives.  My father, Col. James Slaughter, then lived on the Rappahannock River where Jones Green now lives.  I went to school to John Wigginton, a first rate English teacher in the Little Fork.  My father sold this farm to Gavin Lawson, and bought another of his brother.  Col. Francis Slaughter, near Culpeper Court House, where Samuel Rixey now lives…

Slaves to be liberated.  Samuel Holiday to have 400 pounds of currency.  Jane Stewart (widow of James) to have 5 pounds in case she survives me, if she does not the same amount to her daughter, Betty.  Jane Smith, widow of Alexander Smith, 5 pounds currency.  Mrs. Williams, mother-in-law of Cossun Day, to have 56 pounds currency.  Bequest to children of John and Margaret Doby, their son James excepted.  Legatees: Joseph Craig (brother), James Doby and wife, Ann.  Exrs: Gavin Lawson (of Stafford County) and William Allanson (of Fauquier County), each to receive 50 pounds currency.  Wit: Edward Pendleton, Daniel Morgan, William Lawson, Daniel Weathley.

Will Abstracts of Culpepper County, Virginia 1791-1803, US/CAN 975.5392 P2s.  It reads as follows:I William Lawson of Culpeper being at present much indisposed but in perfect sense of memory do make and ordain this my last Will & Testament in the first place it is my wish and desire that any debts I may be justly owing be honestly paid and next I leave to Mr. James Jett Senr. of the county aforesaid & Mr. Samuel Gordon of Falmouth all the property and interest I possess or am entitled to of every kind & nature Whatever.  In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th November 1802.

This Last Will and Testament of William Lawson decd was exhibited to the Court and proved by the oath of Joel Doggett and ordered to be recorded And there being no Executor named in the said Will on the motion of James Jett Letters of Administration with the Will annexed is granted him he having made oath thereto and given bond and security according to Law.

John Nicholas was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1763, was elect Representative from Virginia in the Third Congress as a Democrat.  Died at Geneva, New York, 31 December 1819.  John Nicholas married Anne Lawson, daughter of Gavin Lawson, of Stafford County, Virginia.  Robert Selden Rose married another daughter, Jane Lawson.  Messrs. Lawson, Nicholas, Rose and a Kinsman, Col. Fitzhugh, with their families and slaves removed from Virginia in 1803 to what was then called the “Genesee Country” in Western New York.  From the Nicholas Family.
