Essex County, VA Deeds and Wills 1695-1699, page 70 – Robert Paine (Payne) and Katharine, his wife sold to Leonard Chamberlan and Robert Coleman a tract of land, containing 900 acres, lying on the south side of Rappahannock River, which belonged to his Grandfather Epaphroditus Lawson. It was signed by Robert Payne and Katherine Payne. Wits: John Wood and Samuel Griffin. Recorded in Rappahannock County 4 October 1689. Katherine Payne appeared in the Essex County Court and relinquished her right of Dower 10 October 1689.

Richard Covington have appraised such part of the Estate of John Williamson as presented to us by Cloudy Lawson, Executor of the said deceased as follows: 15 pounds of pewter, 1 parcel of old corner toules, 2 deer skins, 2 old pots and one pestle, a few old clothes, 2 old barrels and 1 old chest, 2 old feather beds and 2 old sheets and 1 rug. Virginia Tax Records – From the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, the William and Mary College Quarterly, and Tyler’s Quarterly. Virginia Quit Rent Rolls, 1704. During the colonial period all landowners in Virginia paid to the King an annual “quit rent” of one shilling for every fifty acres. It is singular that, as lists must have been sent annually, only one, that of 1704, has been discovered. Quit Rent for Essex County list Claudy Lawson with 100 acres.

Unto my loving son John Lawson, 3 cows, Chaney, Nanney and Brandy, two year old yearling, 4 yews and a ram, 4 pewter dishes, 1 feather bed and all the furniture to it belonging, 2 chests, 1 frying pan and 4 pewter plates, 3 iron pots and 3 pot hooks and 1 brass kettle.Unto my beloved son, John Lawson the plantation where I now live, together with all my land to it belonging as also fencing, orchards and gardens.Unto my grandson James Burne, 1 yew.
My son, John Lawson remain and stay with Thomas Munday until he shall attain to the age of 21 years. Witnesses: Garret (X) Burne, Sarah (X) MacKenny and Martha (X) Munday. |

Essex County, VA, Order Book 5, 1716-1723, page 521 – Garret Bourne and John Lawson being both before this Court for feloniously stealing one turkey and one other Dunghill fowl from Francis Paget and it appearing to ye Court by confession of the parties that they are guilty. It’s ordered that the Sheriff give the said Bourne 11 lashes and the said Lawson 21 lashes will laid on his bare back at the Public Whipping Post of this County and then to be discharged paying all fees. |
