General of Virginia send greeting in our Lord God Everlasting &c. No know ye that I Edward Diggs do with the consent of the Council of State accordingly give and grant unto Robert Tomlin (missing) acres of land lying on the South of Rappahannock River between the land (missing) and Epaphroditus Lawson and beginning at a marked white Oak upon the Creek (missing) and the said one (missing) extending itself into the woods (missing) East parallel to the River (missing) 175 perches into the land of said La(missing) by South a mile and (missing) East to the extent of the first mentioned (missing) angle the said land having been granted by Patent unto said Robert tomlin bearing date the (missing) day of May 1654 to have and to hold the said land &c given under our hands this (missing) day of Missing) 1655. W. M. Underwood – Know all men by these presents that I John Paine (Payne) for a valuable consideration by me in hand received have sold a certain quantity or parcel of land being in estimate 400 acres or thereabouts the said land being part of a Patent of 940 acres of land formerly by me of Francis Hobbs since confirmed to me by the Governor and Council bearing date the 15 November 1653 the above said land bounding… Know ye that I John Paine with the consent of my beloved wife, Margaret Paine, do sell and assign for ever unto Thomas Erwyes and Thomas Wright… In witness whereof I have set our hands 11 November 1656. Rowland	11 Dec 1656	Lancaster	Lancaster County, VA, Deeds, Wills and etc., Book 1, 1652-1657, page 315 – At a Grand Assembly held at James City, 11 December 1656, whereas a petition of the inhabitants of the Lower Precincts of Lancaster County bearing their vast distance from the County Court, was presented the Honorable Assembly by Capt. Moore Fantleroy and their desire of having the County divided. It is ordered that according to an Order of Court dividing the said County a present into Parishes be for the future the bounds of the two Counties, the lower Precinct of Mr. Bennett’s land known by the name of Naemtocke of the South side the eastern most branch of Moroticon Creek on the North side, the River be the lower bounds of the Upper County, the Lower County to retain the name of Lancaster and the Upper County to be named Rappahannock County and notwithstanding this division both Counties to be liable to the Burgesses Chardge of this present Assembly. Mr. Rowland Lawson was named as one of the Commissioners of Lancaster County.

Richard	17 Dec 1657	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1656-1664, Book 2, pages 73-74 (54) – Cuthbert Potter Attorney of William Pattison do hereby assigned over all the right and interest of the within specified Indenture unto Richard Lawson or his assignees as witness my hand this 17 December 1657. Signed Cuthbert Potter. Witness by Edward Kemp and Richard Robinson.Next entry on pages 74 (54-55). These presents witnessed that I William Pattison in consideration of a Bill of fiv(missing) pounds of tobacco already received which was in consideration of a servant entertained by Richard Lawson who called himself John Turner (missing) by the said Lawson employed in his service, I do by these presents demise released and discharge the said Lawson his heirs and assignees from all damage or demand whatsoever for or concerning (missing) entertaining or employing the said servant. Lawson’s Neck	26 Oct 1658	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1656-1664, Book 2, page 36 – Know all men by these presents the I John Weir of the County of Rappahannock, Planter for the valuable consideration by me in hand received have sold unto Henry Berry his heirs and assignees forever a parcel of land known by the name of the Bottom of Mr. Lawson’s Neck the said land being part of (missing) formerly purchased by me of William Clappham Junior being thus bounded beginning at (missing) Neck at the marked trees bounding the said land from the land that Mr. Lawson is now living on (missing) extending downward between two marshes to the bottom of the said land butting upon Occupacia Creek (missing) land I warrant unto the said Berry and his heirs from me my heirs or any person or persons whatsoever claiming the said land by or from me in witness whereof I set my hand 26 October 1658 in presence of Francis Weir and Peter Cornewell. Richard, Epaphroditus & Elizabeth	Oct or Nov 1658	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1656-1664, Book 2, page 86 (68) – The last will and testament of Richard Lawson (missing) delivered by word of mouth to Mr. John Catlett and Mr. John Paine; being the day before he departed out of this life which was (missing)ber, 1658. That his wife* enjoy his plantation that he (missing) during her life and afterwards Elizabeth Lawson the daughter of Epaphroditus Lawson (missing) case said Elizabeth die before his wife then his wife to dispose of the plantation as she pleases. Item – His wife to have and enjoy all his goods excepting that James Gaines have a heifer; that John Taylor, his servant, have a heifer. If said John Taylor survive his m(missing) time with Elizabeth his daughter and if the said Elizabeth survive (missing) then she to have (missing) aforesaid heifer. (missing) land upon the so (missing) Occupacia Creek (missing) John Whitty according to mutual agreement which (missing) deliver unto the said Lawson two men servants the age of sixteen and twenty years, having sufficient bedding and clothing, where note that the land was excepted in case the full tract were included within the bounds of the patent, and not entrenching upon any mans land. This being all to the best of our remembrance we subscribe (missing) day and year abovesaid. Signed John Catlett and John Paine.Postscript. Elizabeth & Richard	2 Nov 1659	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1656-1664, Book 2, page 98 (77) – These present witness that I Henry Corbin general Attorney of Capt. John Whitty do hereby assign over to Mrs. Elizabeth Lawson alias Page, all the right title & interest that the said Capt. John Whitty ever had, now hath or hereafter shall have to an extent upon a parcel of Land of Richard Lawson, deceased, her late husband & for a debt due to the said Capt. Henry Dawson or Lawson	18 Jan 1660 /61	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1656-1664, Book 2, pages 162-163 – This one is confusing in that one place it has his name a Henry Lawson and another it has it as Henry Dawson. Page 162, 24 July 1660, Robert Dixon of the City of London before John Daniel, Notary Public, assigns to Henry Lawson Power of Attorney to recover from Henry Corbin and Samuel Griffin all books, etc. of the estate of Miles Dixon, deceased, and to act in any other matters. However, in the next document on page 163 it states the Henry Dawson of Warwick River being the true and lawfully Attorney of Robert Dixon, administrator and lawfully brother of Miles Dixon, late of Rappahannock, do hereby constitute and appoint and in my place Col. More Fantleroye my true and lawfully Attorney to administer in my behalf of Mr. Henry Corbin and Mr. Samuel Griffin… Signed and seal Henry Dawson on 18 January 1660/61. The same mix up of Lawson and Dawson is on page 164 also. I tend to believe it is Dawson.
Elizabeth & Richard	20 Feb 1662 /63	Gloucester (Rappahan -nock?)	Virginia Patent Book 4, page 88 (573), 20 February 1662/63 – Elizabeth Lawson, 1400 acres Gloucester County. Beginning at marked trees running west, southwest cross the upper end of the great Island in Rappahannock River, cross the marsh and lower part of the Neck of Land upon which said Lawson liveth, running parallel to the river &c. to land of George Eaton, east, southeast to Lawsons Creek &c. Granted to Richard Lawson, deceased, 6 October 1656 and given to said Elizabeth, his wife, by will.

In the freshes of Rappahannock River beginning at northwest end of 1000 acres taken up by Epaphroditus Lawson, northwest upon land of Wm. Hall and west upon Mr. Moselys line, including the Marsh. Granted unto Jno. Barrow 13 October 1657 and by him sold to said Mosse.

Elizabeth, Richard & Epaphroditus	22 Feb 1667 /68	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1663-1668, Book 3, pages 407- 411 – This Indenture made the 22^nd of February 1667/8 between Robert Payne and Elizabeth his wife and Rich Mosely, both of this County of Rappahannock and Parish of Sittingbourne… Consideration: Five thousand pounds of good and lawful tobacco with caske by them in hand received at the sealing and delivery of these present do give grant alien enforced and confirmed fully clearly and absolutely unto the said Richard Mosley his heirs and assignees for ever all that eleven hundred acres of land be it more or less lying and being in the County and parish aforesaid and on the south side of Rappahannock River and formerly belonging to Richard Lawson, late of this County, deceased and now in tenure and occupation of the said Mosley and belonging to the said Robert Payne in right of his wife Eliza daughter of Epaphroditus Lawson elder, brother to the said Richard Lawson, one part of which said land (vizt) three hundred acres was purchased of Will Moseley of the aforesaid Parish and one hundred and sixty of Henry Berry formerly living in the aforesaid County by Wm. Hall late of this County Coop. and by him sold to the aforesaid Richard Lawson the other 640 acres taken up by the said Richard Lawson as by a patent in his name may and will more at large appear bearing date the 27^th of February 1666 (should have been 1656) all which 1100 acres lying near and on the Branches of a Creek called Occupacia Creek. Vizt. 460 acres lying and being where the said Mosley now liveth the other 640, lying behind the now land of Wm. Mosley and known commonly by the Name of Page’s Hills… In Witness where of the said Robert and Eliza his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written. Signed and seal Ro. Payne and Eliza Payne. Witnesses W. Moseley, William Underwood, George Andrah and Lawrence Hoaker. Recorded 6 May 1668.Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1663-1668, Book 3, pages 413-416 – Richard Moseley sold this land to William Moseley on the same date and it was also recorded on the same day. Witnesses were Ro. Payne and William Underwood.
Elizabeth Jr.	22 Feb 1667 /68	Rappahan -nock	Notes on Immigrant Lawson’s of Tidewater – A Search for Clues to the Illustration of Origins, by Caroline Kemper Bulkley; The Lawson’s of Virginia (Virginia Magazine, Vol. IV, 1894.) – Elizabeth Lawson, Jr. was married to a man using the name of Davis; with him she signed at least one deed, which has been taken to mean she had two husbands. Robert Payne, her son, prosecuted and proved his claim as the heir of his grandfather Epaphroditus, against William Clapham, Jr., his grandmother’s second husband. There were no “heirs named Davis”; Elizabeth Lawson Jr. was the wife only of Robert Payne and mother of Robert Payne, Jr. The elder Robert Payne was the Clerk of Rappahannock County and the first clerk of Essex County.The Davis deed was made 11 September, 1666 and for a good price, turns over land inherited from Epaphroditus Lawson, her father, to Thomas Medestard, the brother-in-law of her step-father, possibly her uncle. It is signed Davys by attorney Fleming, who has before appeared in the parental affairs. By the time stepfather Clapham has been dead about six years. This fact may or may not have relevance in the light of Robert Payne’s petition to court for resumption of his own name “20th of 9 Bris. 1666.” Any discussion as to the authenticity of the documents signed Davis or of the dual identity of the persons involved may be permanently settled by perusing the records of that court.On the 22 February 1667/68 this appears: Indenture between Robert Payne and Elizabeth his wife of Sittingbourne Parish County of Rappahannock, Virginia. It is from the Rappahannock Record Book of 1663-68. It is witnessed by William Underwood, W. Moseley and George Andrus. Elizabeth Payne came into Court and again acknowledged this contract 4 November 1674. The following is the full text of court action; quite evidently the justices were fully satisfied with the reasons laid before them, although they are not set forth: – “Upon the petition of Robert Payne showing civil reasons and cause to assume the name of Davis, which name he hath passed and been called for the space of about five years past, acted as a public officer in the court of Rappahannock County, married a wife acquired sevll lands goods debts and possessions in the country and desiring to undeceive the world by manifesting his true surname to be Payne, this Court is pleased and accordingly doth hereby make known and publish to all persons concerned that the right and true surname of the said person hitherto called Davis and of his wife and issue (when he shall have any) is and shall be from henceforth called, accepted and taken to be Payne as above said and doth further order that all official acts records Judgments, instruments and proceedings of that quality whatsoever made done entered copied or attested by the said Payne by or under the name of notion of Davies shall be esteemed accepted and held in as full and equal force value and authenticities and esteem as if he had acted therein by his right and true surname and that all lands, tenemts possessions, rights, privileges, heridataments, debts, goods, servants, profits and other estate of wt nature, equality kind or condition so ever legally acquired, grained, earned or possessed by the said Payne under the borrowed name of Davies as aforesaid are confirmed and established unto him the said Payne and his wife and his heirs….
John	8 Jun 1671	Lancaster & Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1668-1672, Book 4, pages 440-442 (232) – John Davenport of the County of Lancaster with the consent of Margaret his wife for and in consideration of the sum of 5,500 pounds of good tobacco and cask to the said Davenport in Bills passed by Richard Barber his heirs forever the one half of mostly of 580 acres of land lying and being on ye South side of Rappahannock County about 3 miles from ye River beginning at a marked Poplar standing near a Run of Occupacia Creek being a corner tree of Cornelius Noell and Vall. Allin’s land… East wards of Chickohominy Path whence by or near ye said Path towards Portobagoe… Signed and seal 8 June 1671 John Davenport and Margaret Davenport. Witnesses Robert Griggs and John (his I mark) Lawson. Recorded in Rappahannock County 20 June 1671.
Joshua	1 Jul 1671	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1668-1672, Book 4, page 455 (240) – Know all men by these present that I George Bruce of the county of Rappahannock do constitute and appoint my very well beloved friend Henry Crighton of aforesaid county to be my true and lawful Attorney for me to plead a suit of law now depending between the said George Bruce and Joshua Lawson in the court held for this county the first Wednesday of July this present year wherefore I do give my said Attorney full power all Attorneys have or ought to have in witnesses here of I have set my hand and seal this 1 July 1671. Josiah	21 Oct 1671	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1668-1672, Book 4, page 501 (266) – These present witnessed that Josiah Lawson of the County of Rappahannock, Planter, do make ordain and appoint Thomas Jones of the same County to be my true and lawful Attorney for me and in my name, steed and place to answer such suit and suits as shall be commenced against me, the said Lawson to the next Court held for Rappahannock County aforesaid and what my said Attorney shall lawfully do, I shall ratified and confessed as witness my hand and seal the 21^st day of October 1671 in the present of Henry Clarke and Joane Clark. Joshua	5 Mar 1671 /72	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1668-1672, Book 4, page 530 (282) – Know all men by these presents that I Elizabeth wife of John Hull of the county of Rappahannock do constitute and appoint Thomas Freshwater of the same county to be my lawful Attorney to acknowledge a certain parcel of land in the County Court above said sold by my above said husband unto John Sherlock Jr. and one Phillip Davis as by deed of sale more at large may appear and whatsoever my said Attorney shall do in the premises I do hereby ratify and confirm as lawfully as if I myself were personally present, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5 March 1671/72. This my will and desire is that my 300 acres of land shall be at my Landlady’s, Sarah Bowyers dispose to do what she think fit to sell or otherwise and if the said Sarah Bowyer die without any Will then the sid 300 acres of land to be divided between Samuel Flood and Bridgett Essex, the daughter of John Esses and further my Will is that the said Bridget Essex shall have one heifer about 2 ½ old and her increase for ever and also I give one steer about the same age to Samuel Flood. And further my will is that my Landlady, Sarah Bowyers shall have all the rest of my cattle and hogs to do what she please either to sell or other ways what she shall think fit as witness my hand and Seal this 18 April 1673. To all to whom this present writing shall com, I Alexander Dudley of the County of Rappahannock, Planter, send Greeting. Whereas Joshua Lawson of the County aforesaid do (or pretended to) lay clam unto 500 acres of land situate near Rappahannock Creek in the County aforesaid , my part of a Dividend of 1,000 acres of land given and devised by the last Will & Testament of Anthony Stevens unto and between on John Fulcher and me the said Alexander Dudley, the pretence of which clam aforesaid is that the said Joshua Lawson obtained (contrary to Law) a writing or Deed under my hand and seal for the Conveyance of the said 500 acres of land in my nonage (vizt.) under age of one and twenty years. Now this present writing witnessed that in regard the said Deed was so obtained as aforesaid and no consideration ever paid to or received by me for the said 500 acres of land I ye said Alexander Dudley do hereby declare and publish that ye said Deed was fraudulently obtained and contrary to Law and do therefore make void release vacate and discharge the same Deed and every article and agreement therein contained. George Bryor’s where now the said Thomas Goose and Bridget Eale lives, as more at large appeared by Mr. Clark’s conveyance bearing date the first day of September 1673; Furthermore we the said Thomas Goose and Bridget Eale do likewise sell the said Christopher Pridum 125 acres of land upon the said 200 acres above mentioned oout of the Dividend where the said Thomas Goose and Bridget Eale now dwelled; the whole being 325 acres… Moreover we do bind ourselves in the penal forfeiture of all the land conveyed unto us by the aforesaid Christopher Pridum and Bridget Pridum his Wife mentioned by Deed bearing date with these presents. Joshua	4 May 1681	Rappahan -nock	Old Rappahannock County, VA – Deeds, Wills, Inventories and etc. 1677-1682, Book 6, pages 304-305 (63 in another book) – This Indenture made 4 May 1681 between Andrew Boyer and Sarah, his wife of the one party and Robert Prid of the other party, witnessed that ye said Andrew Boyer and Sarah his wife for and in consideration of the Assignment of 2 Indian Servants belonging unto the said Prid as his right of Conquest made unto him the said Boyer a Receipt whereof said Boyer do hereby acknowledge himself paid and therefore do grant unto Robert Prid one parcel of land containing 200 acres being in Rappahannock County being part of a greater tract formerly conveyed to the said Boyer by William Loyd, Gentleman by Deed bearing date 1 July 1668, the said Land bounded beginning at a small re Oak being a corner tree of Joshua Lawson’s thence running west by or near a crooked line run between the said Boyer and Francis Scott unto another small red oak thence running NE dividing the land now mentioned from the old tract of 600 acres to a certain stake on propose sed down being near a white oak in another line of the said 600 acres thence along by or near into the said line E. to a corner tree of said Lawson’s and lastly SW by South along the said Lawson’s line to the place where it first began. In Witness whereof the said Andrew and Sarah, his wife have set their hands and seals the date above written and further we the said Andrew and Sarah his wife do acknowledge that after our deaths the 2 Indians above said shall return to the said Prid and his heirs or assignees. The following supporting deposition was attached to it. Deposition of John Beatson, age 39 years or thereabouts, said that whereas Samuel Floyd deceased the last year now past before… before his death Samuel indicated to Andrew Boyer of two bills which had for tobacco due unto him (viz.) William Loyd being upon Mynocun Run on the North side of the said Run and on the South East side of a Branch between the said land and the now Dwelling Plantation of the said David Pursell and said John Fulcher to have his choice of any part of the said land lying on the South East of the said Branch for the quantity of 120 acres aforesaid together with all ways, water and all appurtenances belonging. To have and to hold unto him the said John Fulcher with all privileges forever to quietly possess and occupy without the hindrance of me or any other persons and with warranty from all other claims and demands lawfully made, he the said John Fulcher and his heirs pay quitrents. Granted to Epaphroditus Lawson, 22 May 1650, which became the estate of Robert Paine (Payne) as marrying the daughter of said Lawson, which land was deserted and now granted by order &c. Elizabeth & Thomas	14 Apr 1690	Rappahan -nock	Rappahannock County, VA, Court Orders 1686-1692, page 162-163 (217-218), Court held 14 April 1690 – Ordered that the interrogation is put to Elizabeth Lawson of this County, single woman, touching a supposition she is charged with of having a bastard child late come of her body and concealing and burying the same, be of record as also what answers the said Elizabeth shall make therto- 1 Q – Do you own what is reported by the jury of women? 1 A – I own it all. 2 Q – Who helped you to bury the child? 2 A – No body. 3 Q – Where were the people of the house when you were delivered? 3 A – All in the house, my father & uncle – my father walked about the outward room all night and in the morning went to fetch Betty Jackson. 4 Q – When was the child born and when was it buried? 4 A – It was born about two hours before day and buried whist my father went to call Betty Jackson. 5 Q – Did ye father know anything of it? 5 A – No not anything at all. 6 Q – What were ye motives to bury it privately? 6 A – For fear of my father’s anger. 7 Q – Who was the father of the child? 7 A – Thomas Lawson. 8 Q – What did you propose to Tho. Lawson when you found yourself with child? 8 A – Nothing at all, I did never speak to him about it. 9 Q – Did ye father know when you were delivered? 9 A – No not anything at all of it. Elizabeth Lawson of this County, single woman being charged before Col. John Stone with the suspicion of having a bastard child late born of her body and with the concealing and burying thereof by virtue of a warrant from the said Col Stone a jury of able matrons were impaneled and sworn to search the body of the said Eliz. And inquire into the fact, who returned their verdict to this Court and the said Elizabeth being also brought before this Court and upon her examination confessing the same. The Court thought fit and do accordingly order that the high sheriff of this County or his deputy do take unto safe custody the body of the said Eliz. Lawson and he is to detain without bail or main___ and safely convey her to James County to answer the so fact before the Honorable President and Chancel on the 4^th day of the next General Court.

Joshua	8 Jan 1690 /91	Rappahan -nock	Rappahannock County, VA, Court Orders 1686-1692, page 200 (274-275), Court held 8 January 1690/91 – Joshua Lawson by his Attorney making complaint to this Court that he lyeth imprisoned without bail or mainprize by Execution issued upon an Order of the said Court bearing date 6 August 1690, for 20 pounds Sterling money of England granted to Mrs. Katherine Fantleroy. Notwithstanding he hath already paid a considerable part of the said Debt and hath a sufficient discharge from the same under her hand in writing and humbly moving that the Writ Audita Querela may be granted him. The Court have ordered that said Writ issue directed to the High Sheriff of this County or his Deputy, to give Lawful notice to the said Mrs. Katherine Fantleroy that the said Complaint is referred for a hearing to the next succeeding Court and that the said Lawson be released, he giving in good security for his personal appearance at the said Court and standing to and abiding the award thereof.Joshua Lawson together with Mr. Arthur Spicer this day in open Court acknowledged themselves indebted to Capt. Samuel Travers, High Sheriff of this County, in the just sum of 40 pounds Sterling money of England to be paid unto said Samuel Travers, his Exrs. Admistrs. Or assignees in case the said Joshua Lawson shall not make his personal appearance at the next succeeding Court to be held for this County. And there stand to abide and perform what the said Court shall award in a matter depending between the said Lawson complainant and the said Mrs. Katherine Fantleroy Defendant.
Joshua	5 Feb 1690 /91	Rappahan -nock	Rappahannock County, VA, Court Orders 1686-1692, page 206 (283), Court held 5 February 1690/91 – Whereas at the last Court held for this County, Mr. Arthur Spicer became bound with Joshua Lawson in the Penal Sum of 40 pounds Sterling money to be paid unto the High Sheriff of the County &c. in case the said Lawson should not make his personal appearance at the next Succeeding Court held for this County and then and there prove the Discharge pleaded against part of a Judgment obtained against him by Mrs. Kath Fantleroy for 20 pounds Sterling money and for as much as the said Lawson hath not made his appearance accordingly, the Court have ordered that the said Arthur Spicer do pay and discharge the said Judgment with all cost of suit by the same ways and means as the said Lawson then was or now is Capacitated to discharge the same, to be paid and done with cost of suit als exe.
