John Stone of the County of Richmond, Gentleman in the full sum of 600 pounds Sterling current money of England. In Witness whereof I have set my hand and fixed my seal this 3 May 1694.The Condition of this obligation is that if the above bound Henry Fleet his heirs or assigns shall at all times hereafter never trouble or disquiet the quiet and peaceable possession of the said Col. John Stone his heirs or one Dividend of Land containing 900 acres lying on the Eastward side of Rappahannock Creek formerly in the possession of Mr. Bryan Hodgson deceased, and also of one other Dividend of Land containing 730 acres of land lying on the head of Rappahannock Creek now in the possession of the said Col. John Stone both which dividends of land was granted to Col. John Walker by Patent bearing date 16 April 1668. Then this obligation to be void, otherwise to stand in full force and virtue as witness my hand and seal as above dated, signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of us. Richmond County, VA, Order Book 2, 1694-1699, pages 99-100, Court dated 5-6 November 1695 – Thomas Parker as Marrying Belinda Pursell brought his action in this Court against William Jenkins, Executor of Martha Stopford, deceased and declares that the said Martha in her lifetime did contract and agree with the said Belinda to make a thorough cure of a certain sore leg that Henry the son of the aid Belinda was afflicted with, in consideration whereof the said Belinda did pass her Bill unto the said Martha for the payment of 700 or thereabouts, of tobacco, but that the said Martha in her lifetime in no wise regarding her said Agreement nor the performance of the said Cure so by her undertaken did wholly neglect the same and at the time of her decease left the said sore as bad, if not worse, as when she undertook it whereby the said Complainant was forced to be at great charge and expense to make the said cure, and therefore in fact saith that he is Damnified and damage hath sustained to the value of 1000 pounds of tobacco and therefore craves Judgment together with cost of suit; And the said William Jenkins comes into Court and pleads Not Guilty in manner and form; Wherefore the Sheriff of this County or his Deputy is commanded to summons 12 good and lawful men of the Vicinage to try the matter in issue who being impaneled and sworn by name, Ralph Whiting, Thomas Lewis, John Rankin, William Sims, Francis Suttle, Daniel Jackson, William Amon, Avery Nayler, Peter Evans, Thomas Newman, Charles Snead and Thomas Bradley brought in this following verdict, We of the Jury find for the Defendant, which verdict the Court do confirm and do dismiss the said suit with costs alias Execution. |

Richmond County, VA, Deed Book 3, 1697-1704, pages 65-66, 22 August 1699 – Whereas John Kennedy, late of this County, deceased, died seized of 200 acres of Land situated, lying and being on the South side of Totaskey Creek in the said County and by his Last Will and Testament did give and bequeath the said 200 acres of land unto his Eldest Son, John Kennedy Junior and his heirs and for want of issue to James Kennedy and his heirs and for want of issue to be equally divided between his four daughters, Sarah, Alitia, Mary and Isabell Kennedy, who now survives and are all married, the eldest to Alexander Fleming, the second to Thomas Alger, the third to George Blewford and the fourth to Wm. Lawson. Now so it is that we the above parties with the free consent and desires of our wives have the day above written unanimously condescended and earnestly requested, entreated and desired Mr. James Samford, Mr. Thomas Baylis, Mr. Samuel Samford and Edward Jones indifferently elected and chosen by us the Subscribers to lay out and make as equal division of the said 200 acres of land into four several parts according to the best of their Judgments, we having already made choice of our several lots and whatsoever the said Mr. James Samford, Mr. Thomas Baylis, Mr. Samuel Samford and Edward Jones shall do in or about the premises we shall be therewith content and hold the same firm and as stable as if by due course of Law it had been divided. The Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Wells of Parish of Farnham I the County of Richmond being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect memory praised be to Almighty God… my body committed to the earth to be decently buried without the vanity of drunkenness as my Executor hereafter named shall see convenient and as for my worldly good – I give as followed my just debts being first paid. Item – Richard Losson, Elizabeth Wells, Thomas Williams Wells I leave him to Richard Losson while the age of 21 and to have at his freedom one suit of apparel. Absolom Wells I give to him my gray passion mare. To Sarah Losson I give a side saddle. To Francis Suttle, my son I give that bed, one ring and a sheet, a colester and pillow. Richmond County, VA, Order Book 10, 1732-1739, pages 697, Court held 6 February 1738/39 – The Attachment obtained by Gilbert Hamilton, Gentleman and Richard Lawson from Landon Carter, Gentleman one of the Magistrates of this County, against the Estate of Edward Edwards for 918 pounds of tobacco and 24 shillings and 6 pence due by Account being returned served on the said Edwards’ Estate by Henry Sisson, Constable and the said Edwards being now called to come forth to answer the same but not appearing nor any person for him, on the motion of the Plaintiffs, Judgment is granted them against the said Edward Edwards for 918 pounds of tobacco, 4 shillings current money (making Oath in Court it is justly due) which is ordered to be paid with costs. The said Return is admitted to Record and it is as follows; “In Obedience to this Attachment, I have attached as the Law directs, to a parcel of unscripted tobacco, to one mare, given under my hand this 14 November 1739, Henry Sisson.” It is therefore ordered that the Sheriff of this County make sale of the aforesaid Mare as the Law directs and after having so done to deliver the attachment tobacco and what the said Mare shall be sol for unto the said Gilbert Hamilton and Richard Lawson in part of satisfaction of the above Judgment. |

We whose names are hereunto subscribed being empanelled did obedient to an Order of Richmond County Court 7 March 1742 met upon the land in Controversy and proceeded to lay of the 100 acres of land claimed by the Plaintiff as by the Surveyors Report hereunto annexed may appear and then also at the desire of the Defendant we laid of the said 100 acres as by the Surveyors plat and report. We find a deed from William Loyd to Andrew Boyer bearing date 1 July 1688 by virtue of which said Boyer was then seized; We find a Deed from said Boyer to Joshua Lawson dated 2 November 1687 by virtue whereof said Lawson became seized; We find a Deed from said Lawson to William James bearing date 6 December 1710 by virtue said James became possessed and that afterwards the said James conveyed the same to the Lessor of the Plaintiff by Deed 17 June 1720 who entered and is thereof possessed. We also find Deeds of Lease and Release from William Lawson, son and heir of Joshua Lawson bearing date 5 and 6 October 1731 to the Defendant, all which are annexed. We also find the several depositions of David Jackson, Solomon Redman, Charles Bragg, Joseph Bragg, Thomas Suttle and Michall Wilder all hereunto annexed. It is my will that my children such as is unmarried to live all together with her in the same manner and subjection to her as they are now to me and more especially my son Epaphroditus, if he should behave ill-natured and undutiful to his mother in any respect, that she may turn him away or either of them that will not behave humble and dutiful to her as such children should do to their parent. Item – After my wife’s widowhood is determined as aforesaid then I give all my lands and plantation unto my son Epaphroditus and he was to let his unmarried sister live there. Item – I give unto my son John one good new bed and furniture. I give unto my daughter Betty Diggs one good new bed and furniture, both these legacies to be paid when my Executor can with convenience without distressing my wife or other children. Also the feather bed I lie on together with the furniture thereunto belonging and the increase of the said Negro Dinah. Richmond County, VA, Will Book 9, 1794-1822, pages 459-460 – Last Will and Testament of Daniel Lawson of the Parish of Lunenburg in the County of Richmond, dated 14 March 1814 and probated 2 May 1814. Item – It is my will and desire that my wife Mary Lawson shall be amply and decently supported out of my Estate, so long as she shall live. Item – To my niece Rebecca Allison, so long as she may live I give the use of the following property to wit all that part of the tract of land which I now live on, lying on the North of a line beginning at the mouth of the branch between my residence and John Garland’s and running a southwesterly course till lit strikes the main road leading from the mouth of Totuskey so as to include at the very least all the mannered lots adjoining the said road together with all the houses, garden, orchards and other appurtenances attached thereto and the 3 following slaves, viz. Job, old Easter and boy Jerry – the bed and furniture she usually lies on and a small bed and furniture which she made for the children, her choice of either my sorrel or bay horses, two good cows, one yoke of oxen and cart and wheels, half a dozen such chairs as she may choose, one good walnut dining table and one of the smaller size, one half of all the pewter, 2 iron pots, two such disks and 8 plates as she may choose, one frying pan, one tea kettle, half a dozen china cups and… At the death of the said Rebecca Allison all the Estate (or such of it as shall not have worn out or be destroyed by time), which I have given her the use of during her life, I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsey Dobyns and to her and her heirs forever. Item – It is my will and desire that old free Judy the wife of my fellow Bradley should be permitted to remain on and occupy the small house and have the use of so much land as I have heretofore permitted her to cultivate near the said house for and during her life. Item – All the residue of my Estate of what nature or kind so ever both real and personal I give and bequeath to my aforesaid daughter Betsey Dobyns to her and her heirs forever. Lastly – I do hereby appoint my son-in-law Thomas Dobyns whole and sole Executor to this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other or former Will or Wills hereto made by me – In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal 14 March 1814. Revolutionary Pensions – Application filed on 30 December 1828, in Henrico County, Virginia, by nephew, Fabius Lawson. One document in this application is statement from William Duval, filed in the City of Richmond, 16 December 1826, which stated the he certified that he was well acquainted with Captain Claiborne Whitehead Lawson and his brother Lieutenant Benjamin Lawson, that they were officers in the Virginia Line about the year 1776. That Claiborne was promoted to Captain in Colonel Richard Parker’s First Virginia Regiment, was in the battles of Stony Point and Buford’s Defeat, in the last named one he was mortally wounded and died in 1780.Fabius Lawson was trying file as heirs of an Officer and/or Soldier of the Revolutionary Army who were slain by the enemy and had not received land from the United States. The application does not say if he was successful. |
