While residing in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, he enlisted and served as a private with the North Carolina Troops as follows: From late in 1775 or early in 1776, six months in Captain Higgins’ Company, Colonel Locke’s Regiment; shortly afterward, three months in Captain Higgins’ Company, Colonel Locke’s Regiment, and later six weeks under General Davidson.
