Found in People, Post offices and Communities in Caroline County, Virginia 1727-1969 and compiled by Reverend Ralph Emmett Fall McDonough, Georgia. In 1731-1732, a rolling road was built from Cook’s Ford across the North Anna River, back of Cedar Fork, and continued roughly parallel to the Caroline-Spotsylvania line to Woodpecker (Gravatt’s) where it turned to cross the Mattaponi River at (John) Downer’s Bridge (Woodford), and followed the north bank of that stream to (Michael) Guinney’s, for a junction with an already existing road to (Francis I) Conway’s tobacco warehouse on the Rappahannock River. Those who worked on the road were slaves of the plantations owned by Robert Taliaferro, Francis Thornton, Anthony Thornton, Thomas Catlett, Thomas Buckner, Michael Guinney, Christopher Tompkins, George Goodloe, Anthony Samuel, rice Williams, William Lawson and Joseph Stevens. |
