From Nathan or Nathaniel Lawson’s Revolutionary Pension application. Washington County, Kentucky – This day, 3 July 1832, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace for said County, Nathan Lawson Senior a revolutionary soldier in the 77 year of his age and made oath that he served in the military service of the State of Virginia during the Revolutionary War upwards of two years and six months as follows – entered the service in 1777 in Captain Thomas Williams’ company three months; six months in Captain McGood’s company, Colonel Burrell’s regiment, and was in the battle of Stono; three months in Captain Morton’s company; three months in Captain Jameson’s company, Colonel Purnell’s regiment; three months under Wagon master Thomas Hatchett and was employed in carrying provisions for the army at Guilford Court House.Also in his pension documents it states that Nathan or Nathaniel Lawson was born 15 March 1755 in King William County, Virginia. He resided in Charlotte County, Virginia, until 1802 and then moved to Washington County, Kentucky.John and Joshua Lawson appeared in Washington County, Kentucky, in support of his claim for pension. Indicated that Joshua Lawson was a brother of Nathan or Nathaniel Lawson. Did not state relationship of John to Nathaniel.

In debt. – This day came the parties by their attorneys and the Defendant’s Attorney relinquishing his former plea saith he is not furt6her informed what to say in defense of this suit, whereby the Plaintiff remains undefended. Therefore it is considered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover against the samid Defendant the sum of 100 pounds his debt in the declaration mentioned together with his costs by him in this behalf expended and the said Defendant in mercy. But this Judgment except the costs is to be discharged by the payment of 20 pounds current money being the reduction of 50 pounds by the scale of depreciation with lawful interest thereon from 1 January 1778 until payment.

I, George Lawson of the County of Charlotte and Parish of Cornwale, Being in my sound mind and perfect Senses (sic), do make this my last Will and Testament. Viz., I lend unto my beloved wife the third part of the Land whereon I now live so as to include the Dwelling house and plantation, during her natural life, also I give one third of the Stock of hogs, Cattle and Sheep, the household furniture, except a feather bed that I hereafter give unto my son Joshua, to him and his heirs forever, I give the Land and plantation that I have lent unto wife to my Son Joshua after her decease also a bay horse and my feather bed and furniture to him and to his heirs forever. I give unto my Sons Nathan, George, John, Benjamin and Zachariah Lawson the remaining part of my Lands to be equally divided among them, to them and their heirs forever. I give unto my daughters Elizabeth and Sarah Lawson two thirds of my Stock of Hogs, Cattle and Sheep, also two thirds of the household furniture to them and to their heirs forever. It is my desire that the Ox Cart be Sold to the highest bidder and the money be equally divided amongst all my Sons and that the plantation and other Tools be kept for the use of my wife, and after her decease that if any Should be left that they may go to my Son Joshua Lawson. I appoint my friends William and Little Joe Morton Executors of this my last Will and Testament.  In Witness where of I have hereunto Set my hand and affixed my Seal this 12 September 1786.

Signed and Sealed in presence of Richard Crews, Agnes her (X) mark Lawson, Sarah her (X) mark Lunderman.At a Court held for Charlotte County the first day of January 1787.  This Last Will and Testament of George Lawson, deceased was Exhibited in Court by William Morton and Little Joe Morton the Executors herein named and the same was proved in Court, by the oath of Richard Crews and Agness Lawson two of the witnesses hereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded.  And the said William Morton and Little Joe Morton terminated in open Court the burthen and execution of the said Will.  Therefore on the motion of George Lawson, son of the said George Lawson, deceased, who made oath according to Law, certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of Administration with the will annexed of the Estate of the said George Lawson, deceased, he giving Security whereupon he with John Baines and Zachariah Lawson his Securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of 200 pounds current money for the said Lawson’s faithful Administration of the said Estate.There was also a note on the side of the page which was hard to read and stated: – At a Court held for Charlotte County 6 November 1826.  On the motion of James Lawson who made oath according to Law.  Certificate is granted him for Letters of Administration on the Estate of the said George Lawson, deceased de bonis non (Note: administrator de bonis non, this term refers to the person appointed by a probate court to finish probate proceedings when the executor or previous administrator can’t finish the job.) with the will amended upon entering into bond with Security, whereupon George Lawson, John C. Daniel, William S. Surveyor, bearing date 5 September 1787, hereto annexed. The survey that followed showed each lot that each person received.  The total number of acres was 222 acres of land situate in the County of Charlotte on the road leading from Charlotte Courthouse to Owens Ferry, bounded by Morton.  It was recorded 1 October 1787.

In debt. – This day came the parties by their Attorneys and thereupon came also a Jury to wit (and it named all the members and sworn then in) do say that the said Defendant hath not paid the debt in the declaration mentioned as in pleading he hath alleged and that the Plaintiff’s Intestate Estate hath sustained damages by occasion by his act awarded one penny damages. Therefore it is considered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover against the said Defendant the sum of 30 pounds current money, the debt in the declaration mentioned and his costs and the said Defendant in mercy. But the Judgment, except the costs is to be discharged by the payment of 15 pounds like money with legal interest thereon from the 25 December 1787 until payment and the one penny damages by the Jurors in form aforesaid assessed.

In debt. – this day came as well the Plaintiff by his Attorney as the Defendant into Court in his proper person and the said Defendant saith he can not gainsay the action of the Plaintiff thereof against him nor but that he doth owe to the said Plaintiff Testator’s Estate the sum of 45 pounds current money with legal interest thereon from the 15 October 1790 until payment is manner and form as against him is alleged. Therefore it is considered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover against the said Defendant his debt by him in form aforesaid confessed and his costs and the said Defendant in mercy. Deducting 11 pounds, 8 shilling and 4 pence paid the 25 December 1790. And it is ordered that execution on the above Judgment be stayed until the 25 December next.

Charlotte County, Virginia, Order Book 10, 1794-1796, page 152, 9 March 1796 – Obediah Brumfield, Adminstrator of John Harris deceased, Plaintiff against Benjamin Lawson, Defendant.  This day came the parties by their Attorneys and came also a Jury to wit, John Wanan, Theoderick Baker, John Kingrton, Edward Clark, Luke Palmer, Mathew Williams, James Harper, John Roach, William Price, Thomas Smith, Charles McKinney and William Rice who being elected tried and sworn the truth to speak upon the issue joined.  The Plaintiff was solemnly called but came not nor is his suit prosecuted.  Therefore on the motion of the Defendant by his Attorney the Plaintiff is non suited and it is ordered that he pay to the Defendant 5 shillings damages according to Law and his costs about his defense in this behalf.

Lepscomb and Nathan Buckley, Commissioners appointed by the Court of Charlotte County and Zachariah Lawson of the same County.  Whereas Jones McKenny late of the said County of Charlotte died intestate leaving a certain tract or parcel of Land containing about 120 acres which was directed by the Court of Charlotte to be divided between John McKenny and the infant children of Elizha Williams that he had by the daughter of Jones McKenny and one half of the said land to be sold by the above Commissioners which was done on the 8 February 1804 being the said children’s part reference to be had from the report of said Commissioners and the order and decree of Court for and in consideration of 38 pounds, 16 shillings current money of Virginia.  This Instrument therefore witnessed that the said William Morton, Caire Jackson, Richard G. Charlotte County, Virginia, Court Orders, Book 20, 1814-1816, page 150, 8 August Court 1815.  Commonwealth against Benjamin Lawson, Defendant – On a presentment of the Grand Jury made the 6 March 1815 for retailing whiskey without license.  This day came as well the Attorney for the Commonwealth the defendant by his Attorney who pleaded not guilty and of this he put himself upon the Country and the Attorney for the commonwealth likewise and came a Jury to with, Charles McKenney, Samuel Hammer, James Lipscomb, John J. Gaines, Thomas Mackey, Benjamin Hazlewood, Pleasant Lipscomb, John Middleton, Jesse Johnson, William Rowlett, Joseph Harris and Charles Farras, who being elected tried and sworn the truth to speak upon the issue, joined on their oath do say that the defendant is guilty of retailing spirituous liquor without license as in the information mentioned therefore it is considered by the Court that for the offence aforesaid he make his fine by the payment of 30 dollars to the Commonwealth and pay the costs of this prosecution.

Charlotte County, Virginia, Court Orders, Book 22, 1818-1820, page 134, 7 June Court 1819.  Benjamin Lawson came into Court and made the following declaration on oath I order to obtain the provision made by the late Act of Congress to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the Untied States in the Revolutionary War that he the said Benjamin Lawson enlisted for the term of three years on 24 September 1777 in the town of Portsmouth in the State of Virginia in the Company commanded by Capt. William Murray who resigned in a few days after said enlistment and was succeeded in the command by Capt. Samuel Addins (or Tddins) of the Regiment of Artillery commanded by Colonel Charles Hermon in the line of the State of Virginia in the Continental States, estimate that he continued to serve in the said Company during the same aforesaid and at the expiration thereof he reenlisted in the same Regiment and continued to served until in the Fall of  the year 1782 when he was discharged from service at Ashley Ferry near Charlestown in the State of South Carolina, that he was in the Battle of Monmouth which was the only Battle that the Regiment was engaged in while he was attached to it.  He further states that his hearing was very much impaired while he was in the service, which is thought to have been occasioned by the firing of cannons and that he is infirm and in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his Country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his possession of this said service.William Morton being sworn saith he is well acquainted with the said Lawson that he is in reduced circumstances.
Whereupon it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the said Benjamin Lawson did serve in the Revolutionary War as stated in the proceeding declaration against the Common enemy on the Continental Establishment and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistances of his Country for support.  It is ordered that these proceedings be transmitted to the Secretary for the War Department.

Charlotte County, Virginia, Will Book 5, page 58 – I Zachariah Lawson of the County of Charlotte and State of Virginia being in perfect mind and memory and knowing that is appointed and for all man to die, I do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament.  In the first place I will and desire that all, any just debts be paid as speedily as possible.  Second I lend to my beloved wife Avanillia Lawson during her natural life only, one third part of the tract of land on which I now reside, my negroes Jacob and Lucy and their increase and one third of all my stock of every discription, household and kitchen furniture, plantation tools and utensils.  Third I give to my son William Lawson all the tract of land whereon he now lives excepting of 50 acres to be taken of the upper part thereof adjoining Flood and Hatley’s line for my daughter Patsey Barrett, the land whereon my son now llives being the track I bought of Col. Wm. Morton and Thomas Barrett, I also give to my son, William my negroes King, Wintt and Moses to him and his heirs forever.  Fourth, I give to my daughter Patsey Barrett fifty acres of land to be taken of the tract whereon my son William now lives as above mentioned and my negroes Jim, Dick and Esther to her and her heirs forever.  Fifth I give to my daughter Nancy Lawson the balance of the tract of land on which I now live and also the one third lent to my wife for life after her death and my negroes Judy and Hanson to her and her heirs forever.  Sixth After the death of my wife I will and direct that my negroes Jacob and Lucy and their increase be equally divided among my children.  Seventh All the rest and residue of my estate of every description I will to be sold and after my debts are paid the proceeds to be equally divided among my children.  Lastly I do hereby appoint my friend Dennis D.
