The same wording as that use for Richard Lawson’s entry, was stated for John Hunt, age 23; John Gouthrey, age 22; John Curtis, aged 18; and Thomas Brookes, aged 36 in the following four entries. |

During the colonial period all landowners in Virginia paid to the King an annual “quit rent” of one shilling for every fifty acres. It is singular that, as lists must have been sent annually, only one, that of 1704, has been discovered. Quit Rent for York County list John Lawson with 100 acres. |

In the action upon the case between Adduston Rogers, plaintiff and John Southerland, defendant for ten pounds sterling damage by means of the defendant keeping an unlawful bull, which bull kill the plaintiff’s riding horse and the defendant refusing to make him satisfaction for his said horse & as in the petition is set forth to which the defendant pleaded not guilty & both parties putting themselves on the Country by trial, a jury was impaneled and sworn to try the issue, joined whose names are Thomas Prisman Jr., John With, John Moss, Thomas Hansford, John Hansford, Samuel Cooper, Henry Dyer, Wm. Lee, Nicholas Phillips, John Gibbons, Thomas Walker and Wm. Waller & on the south by the lands of Mrs. Backey & Shields – also the following personal property to wit, one negro boy called and known by the name of Ben, four steers and one horse with all and singular appurtenances to said undivided tract of land belonging in any way appertaining & all the estate, right, & all interest of the said Daniel Lawson on and to the said granted or intended to be granted tract or parcel of land & premises…. Upon trust never the less that the said William P. Graves his heirs & administrators shall permit the said Daniel Lawson to remain in quiet possession of the said tract or parcel of land hereby conveyed & premises with its appurtenances together with the aforesaid personal property & take the profits thereof to his own use until default…. William P. Graves his heirs & assigns shall & will so soon after the happening of such default of payment & a notice of twenty days to be posted at the door of the Courthouse in the City of Williamsburg sell the said undivided interest hereby granted in said tract or parcel of land together with all the personal property hereby conveyed for cash or such part of the hereby granted premises as the trustee shall think sufficient for the purpose & act of the monies arriving from such sale, shall after satisfying the charges thereof & all others expenses attending the premises pay to the said John A. Smith his executors, administrators or assigns the said sum of $465 with the interest which may have lawfully accrued & the balance of any shall pay to the said Daniel Lawson….
