There were at least two families of Lawsons that lived in Charlotte County, VA or had dealing there before 1800. One is George Lawson and his family, which were listed in his will. The other family were the sons of Benjamin Lawson, who were William, Robert and Benjamin. All three of these sons were officers in the Revolutionary War and two of them became lawyers, Robert and Benjamin. Therefore we have to sort out the two Benjamin Lawsons and the best way is that one could sign his name and the other could not. The Benjamin that was a lawyer married Ellen Leigh 2 October 1783 in Amelia County, VA and died after 1787 and before 1791. Also one of these Benjamins lived just across the county line in Halifax County for a number of years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From Nathan or Nathaniel Lawson’s Revolutionary Pension application. Washington County, Kentucky – This day, 3 July 1832, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace for said County, Nathan Lawson Senior a revolutionary soldier in the 77 year of his age and made oath that he served in the military service of the State of Virginia during the Revolutionary War upwards of two years and six months as follows – entered the service in 1777 in Captain Thomas Williams’ company three months; six months in Captain McGood’s company, Colonel Burrell’s regiment, and was in the battle of Stono; three months in Captain Morton’s company; three months in Captain Jameson’s company, Colonel Purnell’s regiment; three months under Wagon master Thomas Hatchett and was employed in carrying provisions for the army at Guilford Court House.Also in his pension documents it states that Nathan or Nathaniel Lawson was born 15 March 1755 in King William County, Virginia. He resided in Charlotte County, Virginia, until 1802 and then moved to Washington County, Kentucky.John and Joshua Lawson appeared in Washington County, Kentucky, in support of his claim for pension. In case. – This day came the parties by their Attorneys and the Defendant’s Attorney relinquished his former plea, the said Defendant in his proper person saith he can not gainsay the action of the Plaintiffs thereof against him nor but that he did assumed himself to the said Plaintiffs in manner and form as against him is alleged and that they have sustained damages by occasion of the nonperformance of that promise and assumption besides their cost to the sum of 370 pounds, 13 shillings and 9 pence current money. \nI, George Lawson of the County of Charlotte and Parish of Cornwale, Being in my sound mind and perfect Senses (sic), do make this my last Will and Testament. Viz., I lend unto my beloved wife the third part of the Land whereon I now live so as to include the Dwelling house and plantation, during her natural life, also I give one third of the Stock of hogs, Cattle and Sheep, the household furniture, except a feather bed that I hereafter give unto my son Joshua, to him and his heirs forever, I give the Land and plantation that I have lent unto wife to my Son Joshua after her decease also a bay horse and my feather bed and furniture to him and to his heirs forever. I give unto my Sons Nathan, George, John, Benjamin and Zachariah Lawson the remaining part of my Lands to be equally divided among them, to them and their heirs forever. I give unto my daughters Elizabeth and Sarah Lawson two thirds of my Stock of Hogs, Cattle and Sheep, also two thirds of the household furniture to them and to their heirs forever. It is my desire that the Ox Cart be Sold to the highest bidder and the money be equally divided amongst all my Sons and that the plantation and other Tools be kept for the use of my wife, and after her decease that if any Should be left that they may go to my Son Joshua Lawson. Charlotte County, Virginia, Court Orders, Book 22, 1818-1820, page 134, 7 June Court 1819.\u00a0 Benjamin Lawson came into Court and made the following declaration on oath I order to obtain the provision made by the late Act of Congress to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the Untied States in the Revolutionary War that he the said Benjamin Lawson enlisted for the term of three years on 24 September 1777 in the town of Portsmouth in the State of Virginia in the Company commanded by Capt. William Murray who resigned in a few days after said enlistment and was succeeded in the command by Capt. Samuel Addins (or Tddins) of the Regiment of Artillery commanded by Colonel Charles Hermon in the line of the State of Virginia in the Continental States, estimate that he continued to serve in the said Company during the same aforesaid and at the expiration thereof he reenlisted in the same Regiment and continued to served until in the Fall of\u00a0 the year 1782 when he was discharged from service at Ashley Ferry near Charlestown in the State of South Carolina, that he was in the Battle of Monmouth which was the only Battle that the Regiment was engaged in while he was attached to it.\u00a0 He further states that his hearing was very much impaired while he was in the service, which is thought to have been occasioned by the firing of cannons and that he is infirm and in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his Country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his possession of this said service.William Morton being sworn saith he is well acquainted with the said Lawson that he is in reduced circumstances.
\nWhereupon it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the said Benjamin Lawson did serve in the Revolutionary War as stated in the proceeding declaration against the Common enemy on the Continental Establishment and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistances of his Country for support.\u00a0 It is ordered that these proceedings be transmitted to the Secretary for the War Department.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
