\nGeorge &c, To all &c, know ye that for desires good causes and consideration but more especially for and in consideration of the sum of forty Shillings of good and lawful money for our use, paid to our Receiver General of our Revenues in this our Colony and Dominion of Virginia, We have given, granted and confirmed and by these presents for us our heirs and successors do give, grant and confirm unto Jonas Lawson of Henrico County one certain Tract of Parcel of Land containing four hundred acres lying and being on the north side of James River on the Byrd Creek in the County of Henrico aforesaid and bounded as followeth to wit:- Beginning at Andrew Mooreman\u2019s corner on the Byrd, thence up the Byrd according to its meanders east twenty two degrees north, one hundred and ten chains to an ash and oak corner, thence east twenty three degrees south, one hundred and fifty two chains to a corner white oak, thence west twenty two degrees south, seventy chains to an oak corner, thence south thirty eight degrees west, eighty eight chains to a corner black oak, thence west twenty three degrees north, sixty one chains to a corner hickory on Mooreman\u2019s line, thence on his line north thirty eight degrees east, sixty chains and west twenty three degrees north, one hundred and twelve chains to the beginning, with all &c, to have, hold &c, to behold &c, yielding and paying &c, provided &c, In Witness &c, Witness our Trusty and Well Beloved Robert Carter Esq. president of our Council and Commander in Chief of our said Colony and Dominion at Williamsburg under the seal of our said Colony the sixteenth day of June, one thousand seven hundred and twenty seven in the thirteenth year of our Reign.

Note<\/strong>:Fluvanna County took its name from the Fluvanna River, which was what the upper James River was called in colonial times.<\/p>\n

Before settlers from Virginia\u2019s tidewater region began moving into the area, Fluvanna was inhabited by Monacan Indians. One of the largest Monacan settlements in Virginia, Rassawek, was located near the present town of Columbia near Fluvanna\u2019s border with Goochland County. Fluvanna\u2019s first river port was located at Seven Islands,<\/a><\/em> a small but industrious community loosely based between the Hardware River and Bremo Creek.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Goochland County, Virginia Deed and Will Book 8, 1759-1765, page 56: – To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting Know ye that I John Bostick of Goochland County for divers good causes, viz. for five shillings current money of Virginia being in hand paid to me before the sealing and delivery here of but more especially for the love and good will favour and affection which I have and do bear toward my loving friend Jonas Lawson Junr. his heirs one certain tract or parcel of land containing two hundred acres, lying and being in Goochland County on the west side of the Little Byrd Creek and being bounded on the lines of Jonas Lawson Senr., George Payne and Capt. James Cole, it being the said Messuage Plantation and tract of land with the appurtenances unto the said Jonas Lawson Junr. his heirs and assigns to the only use and behalf of the said Jonas Lawson Junr. his heirs and assigns for ever and the said Jonas Lawson Junr. his heirs etc., for and not withstanding any act or thing by him the said John Bostick his heirs or assigns or any other person committed done or suffered shall or lawfully may forever hereafter have hold use occupy possess and enjoy the same and every part thereof with the appurtenances, without the lawfull lett molestation or eviction of him the said John Bostick his heirs or assigns or any other person whatsoever.\u00a0 In witness whereof the said John Bostick to these presents hath set his hand and seal this sixth day of November in the year of or Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty nine.

Goochland County, Virginia, Order Book 8, page 276, December Court 1759.\u00a0 Guy Smith, Plaintiff vs. Jonas Lawson, Defendant.\u00a0 This case went to a jury and they found the Defendant guilty in manner and form as the Plaintiff against him hath declared and they do assess the Plaintiff damages by occasion thereof to twenty-one pounds, thirteen shillings and eight pence.\u00a0 The court required the Defendant to pay the damages aforesaid, the Plaintiff cost and his Lawyer fees.On page 277, Jonas Lawson was also required to pay Thomas Cater and John Lee, who were witnesses for him, each two days attendance – fifty pounds of tobacco.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nIn the name of God Amen, I John Bostick of Goochland County being very sick and weak but of perfect sense and memory thanks be to Almighty God and calling to mind the frailly and weakness of man kind, I do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following vis. I commend my soul unto the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body to be buried in a descent manner after the discretion of my executor and as touching what worldly estate it hath please God to bless me withal I do give and dispose of in manner and form following.
\nInprimus\/ I give and bequeath to my godson Jonas Lawson the son of David Lawson and Anne Lawson my two hundred acres of land whereon I now dwell situate to him and his heirs forever.
\nItem\/ I give and bequeath to my friend George Croudus my bed and furniture and all my pewter and one little chest to him and his heirs forever.
\nItem\/ I give and bequeath to my friend David Lawson after my just debts are paid all the rest of my estate both stock and household goods in any manner or sort whatever and I do likewise appoint and ordain my loving friend David Lawson my whole executor of all my whole estate.\u00a0 In witness where of I do hereby acknowledge this to be my last Will and Testament this twenty sixth day of December, one thousand seven hundred and forty nine.

And on the Motion of the said Executor, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form, James George and John Mosely entering themselves securities for the same.The Court also ordered that Joseph Pace, William Pace, William Johnson and John Pace or any three of them appraise the estate of John Bostick deceased and that his Executor do return an inventory thereof to the next court.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
