On the 20 April 1704 an Act provided for the dividing of St. Peters Parish in New Kent County on 1 June 1704.\u00a0 It was divided into two distinct parishes and that the Division of the said two parishes be from the mouth of Maccadecum (Matadequin<\/em>) Creek, so up the said Creek to Mr. John Lewis his mill, thence down the Queens high road to the Rowling road that goeth from Edward Moors to George Turners so along the said road including the said Moor in ye upper parish, thence along the said road to the plantation of John Baughan Senior who is to be in the upper parish thence upon a line between the plantation of Nicholas Lawson and John Sandidge, the said Lawson to be in the Lower parish and Sandidge in the upper and so upon a straight line to Chickahominy Swamp including Edward Clarks in the upper parish and that the lower part of the said parish shall remain and hereafter be called and known by the name of St. Peters Parish and that the upper part of the said parish shall hereafter be called and known by the name of St. Paul\u2019s Parish.<\/p>\n

Hanover County was formed from New Kent County in 1721 (see map 1721-1730<\/a>) and St. Paul\u2019s Parish was then located in Hanover County, Virginia. Most of the entries below are from the The Vestry Book, St. Paul\u2019s Parish, Hanover County, Virginia 1706-1786, but on the dates of entries below, St. Paul’s Parish was still in New Kent County, Virginia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Vestry Book of Blisland (Blissland) Parish, New Kent and James City Counties, Virginia, 1721\u20131786<\/em>, transcribed and edited by C. G. Chamberlayne, includes a copy of The Blisland Parish Grievances of 1677<\/em> <\/a>between pages xlii and xliii. On January 29, 1677, commissioners sent by the English Government were tasked with inquiring into and reporting on the state of affairs in the colony after the Bacon’s Rebellion. Blisland Parish completed and submitted their \u201cgrievances,\u201d which were signed by subscribers who set their names or marks to the document, dated April 2, 1677.<\/p>\n

Among the signatories were Thomas Mooreman, Charles Bostike, Rowland Horsley, Nichols Lawson, and others who were later listed as processioners in St. Peter\u2019s Parish in 1689.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: Upon examining the document, I observed what appears to be the name “John (?) Lawson” in the second column listed three names below Thomas Mooreman and two names above Nichols Lawson. However, Chamberlayne identifies this name as John Baughan.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nAt a vestry held at St. Peters Parish Church on 4 May 1689 \u2013 It was ordered by the vestry, in obedience to an order of New Kent County Court dated 28 February 1689, that a Procession and Remarking of the bounds of each person land be done in the Parish between 10 May and 10 June 1689.\u00a0 In the list of names of Processioner were Nick Lossen and Thomas Moorman.
\nNote: Thomas Moorman\u2019s son Andrew Moorman was listed in the above Register as being baptized 4 November 1689.\u00a0 Andrew Moorman later owned land next to Jonas Lawson in Goochland County, VA.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Virginia Tax Records \u2013 From the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, the William and Mary College Quarterly, and Tyler\u2019s Quarterly. Virginia Quit Rent Rolls, 1704. During the colonial period all landowners in Virginia paid to the King an annual \u201cquit rent\u201d of one shilling for every fifty acres. It is singular that, as lists must have been sent annually, only one, that of 1704, has been discovered. Quit Rent for New Kent\u00a0County list Richard Lawson with 200 acres and John Lawson 50 acres. Note: is this a mistake when it was written or when it was read or is Nicholas full name Richard Nicholas or Nicholas Richard Lawson?<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Nicholas Lawson was listed in the Act that divided St. Peter\u2019s Parish, 20 April 1704.\u00a0 The dividing line of the two parishes would be from the mouth of Maccadecun Creed, then up the said creek to Mr. John Lewis\u2019s mill, thence down the Queens high road to the Rowlling road that went from Edward Moors to George Turners, thence along the road (which would put Moor in the upper parish) to the plantation of John Baughan Sr. who was to be in the upper parish, thence upon a line between the plantations of Nicholas Lawson and John Sandidge (Nicholas Lawson to be in the lower parish and John Sandidge in the upper one) then straight to the Chickahominy Swamp.\u00a0 The lower parish would be known as St. Peter\u2019s Parish and the upper one would be known as St. Paul\u2019s Parish.
