{"id":98,"date":"2014-12-28T03:58:22","date_gmt":"2014-12-28T03:58:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lawsondna.org\/home\/?page_id=98"},"modified":"2025-09-12T18:27:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T22:27:18","slug":"new-kent","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lawsondna.org\/home\/genealogy\/new-kent\/","title":{"rendered":"New Kent County, Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"header\">\n<p class=\"heading\">On the 20 April 1704 an Act provided for the dividing of St. Peters Parish in New Kent County on 1 June 1704.\u00a0 It was divided into two distinct parishes and that the Division of the said two parishes be from the mouth of Maccadecum (<em>Matadequin<\/em>) Creek, so up the said Creek to Mr. John Lewis his mill, thence down the Queens high road to the Rowling road that goeth from Edward Moors to George Turners so along the said road including the said Moor in ye upper parish, thence along the said road to the plantation of John Baughan Senior who is to be in the upper parish thence upon a line between the plantation of Nicholas Lawson and John Sandidge, the said Lawson to be in the Lower parish and Sandidge in the upper and so upon a straight line to Chickahominy Swamp including Edward Clarks in the upper parish and that the lower part of the said parish shall remain and hereafter be called and known by the name of St. Peters Parish and that the upper part of the said parish shall hereafter be called and known by the name of St. Paul\u2019s Parish.<\/p>\n<p>Hanover County was formed from New Kent County in 1721 (<a href=\"https:\/\/lawsondna.org\/home\/virginia-map-1721-1730\/\">see map 1721-1730<\/a>) and St. Paul\u2019s Parish was then located in Hanover County, Virginia. G. Chamberlayne, includes a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/lawsondna.org\/home\/the-lawson-dna-project\/the-blisland-parish-grievance-of-1677\/\"><em>The Blisland Parish Grievances of 1677<\/em> <\/a>between pages xlii and xliii. On January 29, 1677, commissioners sent by the English Government were tasked with inquiring into and reporting on the state of affairs in the colony after the Bacon&#8217;s Rebellion. Blisland Parish completed and submitted their \u201cgrievances,\u201d which were signed by subscribers who set their names or marks to the document, dated April 2, 1677.<\/p>\n<p>Among the signatories were Thomas Mooreman, Charles Bostike, Rowland Horsley, Nichols Lawson, and others who were later listed as processioners in St. Peter\u2019s Parish in 1689.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Upon examining the document, I observed what appears to be the name &#8220;John (?) Lawson&#8221; in the second column listed three names below Thomas Mooreman and two names above Nichols Lawson. It is singular that, as lists must have been sent annually, only one, that of 1704, has been discovered.
